I saw the explorers on the TV. Looked like they were taking back samples of the material that has them trapped. Couldn't be ice, it was summer. Maybe when they get the samples back some of the scientist can tell them what the material really is.

Doing a little cut and paste DL? Just living up to that hypocrite reputation of yours huh?

Would you like to read the truth?

Here are some of the scientific questions at the core of this issue:

Is the climate changing? Of course. The climate always has changed and always will.
Is the earth getting warmer? We should hope so for at least two reasons: First, the world emerged from the Little Ice Age in the 19th century, so it would be worrisome if it weren’t getting warmer. Second, all the history indicates that humans thrive more during warmer periods than colder ones. It is likely, though, that earth has warmed less than many official temperature records indicate for a variety of reasons, including: few long-term records from either the southern hemisphere or the 71 percent of the planet that is covered by water; distortions from the urban heat-island effect and other faulty siting (e.g., temperature sensors next to asphalt parking lots, etc.; the decline in weather station reports from Siberia after the fall of the Soviet government; the arbitrarily ceasing to include measurements from northern latitudes and high elevations, etc.) The most accurate measures of temperature come from satellites. Since the start of these measurements in 1979, they show minor fluctuations and an insignificant net change in global temperature.
Is the earth getting dangerously warm? Probably not, since the earth was warmer than it is now in 7000 of the last 10,000 years. By the way, does anybody know what the “right” amount of global heat is?
Are we humans causing the warming by our carbon emissions? Actually, most of the “greenhouse effect” is due to water vapor, which makes one wonder why the EPA hasn’t designated H2O a harmful pollutant that they must regulate. Meteorologist Brian Sussman’s calculations in his book “Climategate” show humanity’s share of the greenhouse effect as .9 of 1 percent.
It’s even possible that CO2 may not affect global warming at all. During many stretches of planetary history, there has been no correlation between the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere and global temperature. In other long stretches, the variations of the two factors followed a significant sequence: increases in CO2 followed increases in warmth by several centuries. You don’t need to have a degree in climate science to know that, in a temporal universe, cause does not follow its effect.
Even global warming alarmists have tacitly conceded that CO2 is not the primary driver of climate change when they responded to the relative cooling in recent years by changing their story and telling us that the earth is likely to cool for a few decades in spite of still-increasing atmospheric CO2. Translation: other factors outweigh CO2 in their impact on global temperatures. Those other factors include variations in solar activity (accounting for 3/4 of the variability in earth’s temperature according to the Marshall Institute); changes in earth’s orbit and axis; albedo (reflectivity, meaning changes in cloud cover which are influenced by fluctuations in gamma ray activity); and volcanic and tectonic activity in the earth’s crust. For humans to presume that they are more than a gnat on an elephant’s rump in terms of impact on climate change is vain and delusive.

We incredibly lucky people, who live in the US, have ice makers in our refrigerator freezer compartments, in fact my home has TWO of the advanced technological wonders.

We also have room in our refrigerators to cool and store our delicious lagers.

Oh how I pity the folks in backward third world countries.

    Let them suck ice.

Since the UK is usually not prone to high temperatures (this past summer being an exception), *I* don't bother with ice overly much.

However, I feel that when the man of my dreams finally makes it over here for good, that's gonna change - I'm going to stock up on those ice-cube-bags for sure

The alarmists set sail for Antarctica with a plan to show the world how badly alleged

    Here's a bit of humour on the subject , along with some enlightened comment;

The alarmists set sail for Antarctica with a plan to show the world how badly alleged man-made “global warming” was wreaking havoc across the region. Instead, their Russian-flagged ship was frozen in place after sea-ice coverage hit record-high levels this year. The dozens of global warmists onboard are still stuck as multiple ice-breaking rescue vessels were unable to reach the frozen ship. Climate realists and the alternative press, meanwhile, were quick to ridicule and poke fun at the stranded and beleaguered alarmists. However, the increasingly discredited establishment media has largely failed to notice or report the irony.

The doomed Antarctic “climate research” expedition that ended up being trapped in ice was led by Chris Turney, a professor of “climate change” at the University of New South Wales in Australia. He claims emissions of essential-to-life carbon dioxide — exhaled by all humans — must be drastically curtailed by government to stop “global warming,” which has been non-existent in recent years. The controversial alarmist, who boasts of setting up a “green” business known as “Carbonscape” to profit from increasingly discredited theories underpinning climate hysteria, was on a self-proclaimed mission to “discover and communicate the environmental changes taking place in the south.”

Presumably, being frozen in summer ice was not what Turney and his fellow alarmists had in mind. However, it should not have been entirely surprising. Despite hysterical fear-mongering by the United Nations and self-styled “climate experts,” sea-ice cover in the Southern Hemisphere hit a new record in September of 2013 for the second year in a row, according to the National Snow and Ice Data Center. The latest data shows Antarctic sea ice is more than two standard deviations above normal, climate researchers reported. That is bad news for Turney and the 73 self-styled “scientists,” “journalists,” and crew members participating in the global-warming expedition. According to the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA), their ship, the MV Akademik Shokalskiy, has been trapped in 10-feet thick ice slabs since December 24. Three vessels with ice-breaking capabilities have attempted to reach the alarmists so far. All of them failed. A helicopter rescue attempt on December 30, meanwhile, was reportedly aborted due to strong windsIn a failed effort to raise funds for the scheme from the public, the climate alarmists promised potential donors that they would investigate and share information about “environmental changes” taking place in Antarctica. “Crucially this pristine southern polar region is uniquely placed to monitor the health of our planet,” Turley and his associates said. The team also vowed to seek out information on the intersection between “global climate” and the region, claiming — somewhat ironically, in retrospect — that changes were “threatening the stability of Antarctic ice.”

“The Southern Ocean plays a crucial role in global climate and the carbon cycle,” the climate alarmists wrote, adding that “90% of the world’s excess heat trapped by the atmosphere is going into the ocean and changing circulation patterns, threatening to turn the region into a source of carbon, exaggerating future warming.” The expedition, the team leaders continued, would “make detailed measurements on the passage south (e.g. temperature, salinity, carbon) to determine just how sensitive the Southern Ocean is to change.”

As if it could not get any more embarrassing, a video about the trip featuring Turney explained that the “Australasian Antarctic Expedition” — named after another expedition a century ago by the same name led by Sir Douglas Mawson — “will re-trace the route of its namesake to discover just how much has changed over the last 100 years.” Of course, when the video was produced, the “climate scientists,” rather than being stuck in ice, almost certainly had much different “changes” in mind. A hundred years ago, even without modern technology, Mawson’s expedition did just fine.

“We're stuck in our own experiment,” the Australasian Antarctic Expedition admitted in a statement quoted in media reports, almost comically insisting that ice in the region really is melting despite all of the objective and anecdotal data literally all around them. “Sea ice is disappearing due to climate change, but here ice is building up.” In reality, sea ice in the Arctic is up 50 percent above last year, and in Antarctica, this year saw a new record — the largest sea-ice covering since records began.

As has become typical in everything “climate,” the establishment press has largely refused to tell the truth about the purpose of the expedition — either ignoring the facts altogether, or claiming it was merely a “research” trip. A few have casually mentioned the “climate” connection in passing near the bottom of articles. The avoidance of reality is especially ironic considering that there are taxpayer-funded “journalists” from the alarmist BBC and the Australian ABC, as well as from the almost comically hysterical U.K. Guardian, onboard the ship hoping to capture “evidence” of “global warming.”

“Somewhere far, far to the south where it is summer, a group of global warming scientists are trapped in the Antarctic ice,” noted Newsbusters, a project of the non-profit Media Research Project, which regularly lambastes the media for its poorly concealed biases. “If you missed the irony of that situation, it is because much of the mainstream media has glossed over that rather inconvenient bit of hilarity.” Numerous other commentators have also pointed out the irony, but the establishment press continues to parrot its agenda with little regard for facts — or even humor, apparently.
As the alternative media and independent climate analysts began exposing the truth, critics promptly ridiculed the doomed expedition. Using the Twitter hash tag #ClitanicDisaster, commentators suggested the fiasco was yet another example of attempted global-warming propaganda backfiring in spectacular fashion. “There has been a strong and statistically significant upward trend in climate-change-related public-relations disasters,” wrote University of Sussex economics Professor Richard Tol, who also serves as a professor on the economics of climate change at the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam.

Others ridiculing the alarmists’ PR mega-disaster Tweeted an altered picture of the ship stuck in ice with its name changed to “An Inconvenient Truth,” a mocking reference to Al Gore’s discredited documentary warning of global-warming doom. “This episode has taken on a heightened comedic fiasco-like quality,” noted meteorologist Anthony Watts, president of IntelliWeather and editor of the prominent climate site “Watts Up With That?” (WUWT). “Now, with such a fantastic failure in full world view, questions are going to start being asked.”

Ironically, essentially the same embarrassing fate awaited other global-warming faithful earlier this year in the Arctic. Basing their trips on absurd “predictions” of an ice-free Arctic summer by 2013 — made by Al Gore, pseudo-environmentalist outfits, the BBC, and assorted “climate scientists” — several ships tried to sail through the Northwest Passage. Instead, they got stuck in the ice and had to be rescued, as the market-oriented environmental organization CFACT noted in a piece headlined “Gullible Green sailors trapped in the Arctic.”

“Global warming campaigners have been stymied by the lack of any temperature increase in the major temperature data sets since the nineties,” CFACT said in another article about the more recent sea-ice embarrassment in the south. “They’ve tried to compensate by feeding the media a steady stream of ‘extreme weather’ stories and with shrill claims about polar ice. However, historical and scientific data show today’s weather to be normal.”

In the real world, despite hysterical warnings of climate doom from taxpayer- and Big Oil-funded “experts,” even premier alarmist institutions and the UN have admitted that the data show “global warming” actually stopped some 17 years ago. Alarmists, somewhat humorously, perhaps, try to explain away the inconvenient facts by citing what critics refer to as “The Theory of The Ocean Ate My Global Warming.” Few independent scientists have bought into the controversial theory, which the Obama administration pressured the UN to include in its latest “global-warming” report. The “science” behind UN global-warming theories, meanwhile, has imploded.
In fact, many experts are now even forecasting global cooling.

I'm also interested [as a ticketed skipper and navigator] in how come they managed , with all the modern navigational and information technology , to navigate a ship carrying passengers into such a perilous position ?

    I wonder.
Oh , we don't need to go round that ice , we'll just cut through here.
    maybe.
Oh , damn , the pesky wind changed n blew that ice in around us.
    oh dear.

I suspect lack of prudent seamanship somewhere.

I sense people have lost interest in this bunch of clowns ,
but here's the latest , about 23 minutes old when I found it.

Antarctic helicopter rescue underway at icebound ship (AFP) – 23 minutes ago
Sydney — A helicopter mission to rescue 52 passengers trapped on an icebound Russian research ship finally got underway in Antarctica Thursday after a number of false starts and failed icebreaking attempts.
The MV Akademik Shokalskiy has been trapped in thick pack ice 100 nautical miles east of the French base Dumont d'Urville since December 24, with several icebreakers forced back to open water by impenetrable floes.
A helicopter rescue was announced on Tuesday, but heavy rain and winds saw it shelved until Thursday morning, when a second attempt was foiled by unfavourable sea ice.
The Australian Maritime Safety Authority said a complex, multi-vessel rescue operation would go ahead as soon as weather and ice conditions permitted, with the situation likely to change rapidly.
By late afternoon a favourable window had opened, with expedition leader Chris Turney announcing that a helicopter from the nearby Chinese icebreaker Xue Long had arrived at the marooned ship to begin evacuating passengers.
"The Chinese helicopter has arrived at the Shokalskiy. It's 100 percent we're off! A huge thanks to all," Turney tweeted.

I wonder what the next twist in the tail of this silly misadventure will be ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Maybe this is what happens, anywhere, anytime, when you choose a climate change fruitcake as your science officer.

    "Ahh, Dr. Turney--"

    "Yes, Captain?"

"I know this is your charter, and ahh, I know your IQ is much higher than mine-- ummm, according to all the tests you've cheated on, but ummm-- that's the same ice field that killed the Shackleton Expedition 100 years ago or I can't tie a skiff to a deckcleat..."

"Nonsense, my good chap, all that ice is gone."

"But look, Professor, use your eyes, man!"

"Now Captain, empirical observations are just anecdotal. Why I could tell you all about ice cores and so forth, but the point is that so-called ice is just slush. Now I don't want to tell you your business, but the consensus of scientists would advise you to steam full speed ahead and just mow through."

"Well, if it is the consensus of scientists talking, then, uh, I suppose I should order a recalibration of the instruments."

"You do that Captain, and in the meantime carry on."

    "Yes sir."

    "Good lad."

CORRECTION to below: apparently the global warming nuts are all rescued. Only the ships' crews are still on the ships and refuse to abandon them.

Now the stories will likely drop from the news.

Yeah , that part of the story is 'dun n dusted' , and the media wont want a bit of it any more ,
    but,
the saga of the trapped ship is still to ,a, be explained , and ,b, be resolved.
and last I heard , the Chinese icebreaker is now icebound to , and possibly the French at risk of also.

Three ships put at risk , and at least three nations programs all put way behind , if not ruined for this Antarctic summer , all because of a bunch of clowns .

mmmm lotsa answers to be looked for yet ...............
    Who's paying ?

I will be watching and asking.

I really am an amateur winter mountaineer. (Though I can't post photos to prove it, readers of my novels do not doubt it, because the plots include climbing episodes based loosely on real experience. And no, that is not a plug for the books.)

As such, my heart has always been with the crews, because to me they are analogous to east-Himalayan sherpas and west-Himalayan porters - hired help dragged into peril by fucking morons who have fled the scene of the crime.

Moreover, porters and sherpas typically do not count toward the casualty lists of climbing mishaps unless they are on summit parties. In that sense this story is also similar, because now the media wants to drop this story, due to the global warming angle.

One of the real ironies to this story is that the Turney charter followed a course roughly indentical to the Shackleton Expedition one hundred years ago.

The Global Warming Religion has insisted that climate has been radically changing, that surface features like polar ice are in dangerous flux, and so on. And yet, before Christmas, the Turney expedition recovered an old supply cache from the the Shackleton expedition, one hundred years ago, locked in ice. They developed one hundred year old photographs from the Shackleton expedition, and you know what they found? Landscapes that looked substantively identical to the ice formations and other features that appear in the area to this very day.

That is the part of this story that the media really doesn't want anyone to know about: that the landscape in that area, in spite of all of Al Gore's bullshit, hasn't changed much at all, in the past century.

Goddamned morons and their ice cores.

DISCLAIMER/CORRECTION: I may not have the events here quite right. It may not be the Turney expedition that recovered the Shackleton photographs. Hard to tell, because the media stories are poor. The two events may only have happened at roughly the same time. If anyone knows, please post.
